I love all aspects of music and am passionate about how beneficial it is to learning in general. I encourage my students to join ensembles and choirs where relevant. Apart from being fun, this helps the development of rhythm, pitch and reading skills.

My pupil base has ranged from age 4 to 60, with lessons tailored to the individual. Theory, Sight-Reading and Aural are also part of the mix.

Violin & Violababies and Amanda

I have been trying to find a good method to make note-reading fun, especially for young children. I have found Violin/ViolaBabies to be just that, great fun and an effective way to learn to read music. The books are pitched at the right level, especially with the addition of the CDs

My thoughts on teaching music

I aim for the lessons to be fun, yet informative. I reckon that if the students don’t enjoy it, they won’t practice!

As the student progresses, instrumental and theory examinations can be taken. I use both the Associated Board and Trinity and decide which one best suits the individual.

Musical experience

I started learning the violin and switched to viola after attaining my Grade 8. I studied viola and piano at the Royal College of Music. I was a member of the Ulster Orchestra and the Orion String Quartet. I then toured the world with the Chamber Orchestra of Cologne.

I freelance with several London Orchestras and did numerous West End Shows on violin and viola. I enjoy playing my electric 6-string violin and projects have included a concerto for Electric 6-string and Brass Band and a creation for two electric 6-Strings and Gamelan Ensemble. I also work in fringe theatre, modern ensembles and string quartets.

Throughout my career, I have always taught violin and viola, formerly in schools and now in private practice.
