Cellobabies and Danielle

It is a real joy to be able to offer little ones the opportunity to get started on the cello using the Stringbabies method. The sessions are imaginative, rewarding and lots of fun. Most essentially the children are fully engaged in their musical playtime.

As a teacher, the book provides a solid framework to work with, all the bases are covered in a balanced and logical way. The introduction of written notation is approached verynaturally, making sight-reading and composing seem impressively simple.

Children of pre-reading age are given a superb advantage and doubtless the benefits will be life-long.

My thoughts on teaching music

As a teacher I think itʼs important to share my enthusiasm for playing the cello and offer plenty of encouragement and support. Iʼm always interested in why my pupils choose to play the cello so I can help to ensure their motivation is maintained.

I really enjoy teaching the fundamentals of string playing, I think that a secure start on the cello is created through a balance of establishing aural awareness and a playing technique that is based upon physical awareness and freedom from unnecessary tension.

My aim is that my students have an enjoyable and rewarding experience learning the cello. By creating a relaxed and happy environment where confidence can grow, we can get on with having lots of fun, learning the best instrument in the world!

Musical experience

I was born in Cornwall and am the youngest of five siblings. Growing up, my older brothers and sister all played instruments, by the age of five I was eager to join in and started the piano. I was seven when I began going along with my brother for cello lessons - I got ten minutes tagged on to the end of his.

The Cello soon became a bigpart of my life, at the age of ten I was offered a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. At Chetham’s everyone played an instrument. Practice, singing, aural classes, chamber music and orchestras were all part of daily life.

I continued my training at the Royal Northern College of Music where I was taught by Eduardo Vassallo, the principal cellist of the CBSO.

After graduating from the RNCM with a BMus hons and PGDip in instrumental performance, I lived and worked in Manchester, performing in orchestras, chamber groups and string quartets. I taught the cello, took part in recording sessions, provided backing strings for bands and played at numerous corporate events and weddings. After 18 years in Manchester, in 2013 I came back to live in Cornwall.

Here I teach cello to students who range in age between age 5 and 70. I help to coach the cello section of Cornwall Youth Orchestra and I regularly perform and give recitals.

Last year I established my own business, Cello Cornwall.
