I have many years experience teaching piano, cello and double bass and welcome pupils of all ages and abilities, from beginners and returners to Grade 8. I also teach descant recorder (to Grade 5), keyboard skills, aural, Grade 5 theory, and I accompany exam candidates and at school concerts. I also manage and play cello in the Cotswold Ensemble (playing at special events like weddings, parties and conferences) and I play in our sister group, the Harcourt Ensemble (formal and informal concerts)

Cello & Double Bassbabies and Fiona

I find that my beginning pupils who have already done Kodaly-based singing and musicianship classes as pre-schoolers learn much faster and play much more musically than most of their peers.

So when I found that using the StringBabies method can develop the same core skills through learning to play an instrument, and that the system can also benefit those with specific learning difficulties, it was clearly an inclusive approach to use.

My thoughts on teaching music

My teaching style is holistic, with aural, theory and sight-reading integrated. I aim to develop natural playing technique and all-round musicianship and think it is vital to lay secure foundations. Working for exams can be useful, but “teaching to the test” rarely provides long-term benefits.

Musical experience

I had a year’s piano scholarship to Chethams Hospital School of Music where I studied with Anthony Goldstone, closely followed by a long-term East Riding County Scholarship to study cello with Anna Shuttleworth, professor at the Royal College of Music.

Since graduating from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, I have taught piano, cello, double bass, junior classes, theory, A Level harmony and composition, and class recorder all at Rye St Antony School, Oxford. I taught piano and double bass at Headington Prep School for 20 years, and also taught piano/cello/bass at other local schools.

I joined the Cotswold Ensemble in 1990 as principal cellist, playing for weddings, parties, corporate events, concerts etc. I now also manage the Ensemble, play in our concert wing The Harcourt Ensemble, play with Oxford Sinfonia, and continue my busy home-teaching music practice based in West Oxford.
