As a recent graduate from music college I am really enjoying my career – a mix of orchestral and chamber playing and private teaching.  I love the challenges presented by each individual pupil and enjoy thinking up new ways to help them improve.

Violin & Violababies and Lucia

I had been approached by a few parents of younger children and wanted a framework to help me teach under-6s effectively.  As an auntie I know how clever young children are but had not anticipated just how quickly they could learn until I gave my first StringBabies lesson!  StringBabies has given me that framework and I am already seeing great results.

My thoughts on teaching music

I understand that every learner is different and mould my teaching style to meet their needs.  Exams are not compulsory but I still focus on technique, aiming to give my students all the tools they need to be able to reach and exceed their own goals.  It is just as important to have fun in lessons too!

Musical experience

Lucia is a busy freelance violinist based in London, performing in orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK and Europe. She was recently awarded Master of Music with Merit from the Royal Academy of Music where she studied under Mateja Marinkovi?. She previously studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Thomas Kemp and Pavel Fischer, graduating with a First-Class Bachelor of Music degree in 2010. Whilst studying in Manchester, Lucia progressed to the final round of the Norman George Violin Scholarship and with her string quartet in the Hirsch Prize and played in masterclasses for Ivry Gitlis, Thomas Brandis and Wen Zhou Li.

Lucia works frequently with orchestras including English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Sinfonia Cymru.  She is principal second violin of Orpheus Sinfonia and Guernsey Sinfonietta and leads the Co-Opera Company’s Orchestra, with whom she also played mandolin solo in Mozart’s Don Giovanni last season. Also a keen chamber musician, she has performed across the country with violin-viola ensemble Duo Figaro and the D’Avanzo Piano Trio, including a tour of the Channel Islands last spring. Aside from this, Lucia also likes to organise chamber concerts, often showcasing rarely performed music from the Classical and Romantic periods. Her Masters project was one such concert, airing chamber works by Italian composers including Respighi and Rossini.

Lucia regularly returns to her home county to teach privately and at the Kent Academy of Music. As a teenager she was leader of the Kent County Youth Orchestra and held the title of Maidstone Young Musician of the Year in 2005. She recently returned to play Bruch’s 3rd Violin Concerto with the Old Barn Orchestra and arranges concerts for the “St. Thomas More Music” chamber series in West Malling.
